Oilers Linked to Surprise Defensive Targets Ahead of Trade Deadline

The NHL analyst and sometimes newsbreaker walked through what the Oilers may be targeting ahead of the trade deadline, suggesting their main focus remains adding scoring depth on the wing rather than making a major splash on defense. That doesn’t mean they’ll rule out adding a solid piece on defense if the opportunity presents itself.

And, there might be plenty of opportunities in Winnipeg.

Are the Oilers Looking for An Ekholm Jr?

Pagnotta believes Edmonton would still like to add an “Ekholm Jr.” type of defender — a steady, physical presence who can help solidify the blue line without costing a premium.

And, since Pagnotta thinks the Oilers will prioritize a big move up front, any defensive addition would likely be a lower-cost depth play. Jets defensemen Luke Schenn and Logan Stanley make sense in such a situation.

Schenn, a veteran right-shot defenseman, isn’t flashy but could serve as a reliable insurance policy, especially if Winnipeg retained part of his $2.75 million cap hit. While he likely wouldn’t crack Edmonton’s top six, added depth is crucial given how rare it is for playoff teams to rely on only six defensemen.

Stanley, meanwhile, offers size at 6’7 and carries an appealing $1.25 million cap hit. He’s having the best season of his career, but his right-handed shot and age could drive up his acquisition cost.

Pagnotta also floated higher-end names like Mario Ferraro and Jamie Oleksiak, though both may be unavailable with their teams in playoff positions. A cheaper alternative could be Matt Grzelcyk out of Chicago.
