Oilers Reportedly Scouting Blue Jackets Goaltender
Rumors are flying about the Oilers as scouts monitor Blue Jackets goaltending options, including Jet Greaves.
The Edmonton Oilers appear to be keeping an eye on potential goaltending options, as a recent report suggested scouts were in attendance for the Columbus Blue Jackets’ game against the Colorado Avalanche. Aaron Portzline noted on Twitter that several NHL scouts were at the matchup, sparking speculation among Oilers fans that the team’s goaltending staff may have been observing.
Elvis Merzlikins started for the Blue Jackets that night, stopping 32 of 35 shots and finishing with a .914 save percentage and a 3.10 goals-against-average. While there’s no indication the Oilers were watching Merzlikins specifically — frankly, they could have been there watching a Colorado goalie — the presence of a goaltending scout suggests Edmonton is doing its due diligence in evaluating options should the need arise.
Could the Oilers Be Looking at Jet Greaves?
As Portzline noted in his tweet, “Gentlepeople, start your rumors.” This is the kind of news that tends to take on a life of its own, even if scouts check out games all the time, and there is nothing that points to any imminent moves.

The Oilers’ goaltending duo may require an upgrade at some point this season, and, like 29 other teams, they could be trade partners. The job of a scout is to see different options and report back. At $5.4 million, Merzlikins is likely not a great option for the Oilers. Perhaps Jet Greaves is a better fit and the Oilers were there asking questions about the 24-year-old Group 6 UFA. He might fit the timeline, age profile, and salary better for Edmonton. He has played 24 NHL games, has a .926 save percentage, and a 2.57 goals against average. His numbers in 2024-25 were very solid, and he’s starting this season out well, too.
Considering they have three goalies all on expiring deals, they might be looking for more than a starter next season. They might be looking for depth as well.
