Oilers Quick Hits: Walman, Stastney, Kapanen, Hutson, and Mangiapane Trade Spots

Get the latest Oilers quick hits including roster moves, player updates, and practice news as the team prepares for their upcoming games.

There was plenty of news surrounding the Edmonton Oilers on Monday, as they took to the ice for practice, and several faces showed up. The team also made some roster moves, sending a rookie back down to the AHL. Spencer Stastney discussed facing his former team, and Kasperi Kapanen will return to the lineup on Tuesday night.

Jake Walman Finally Back On the Ice

Spoke to Jake Walman today after he was on the ice for practice. Head coach Kris Knoblauch confirmed that he’s not ready to return yet, but is about a week away, possibly ready when the Oilers do their back-to-back.

His bone has finally healed from the fracture, and he just needs the doctor’s clearance to play in games. He could be in the lineup when Edmonton takes on Chicago or Nashville.

Quinn Hutson Loaned to the AHL

The Edmonton Oilers have loaned Quinn Hutson back to the AHL, after a game where he played on a line with Ike Howard and Matt Savoie. Hutson was an extra at practices this week, so it was likely he would be watching from the press box. The Oilers are logically sending him back where he can continue playing big minutes, knowing that he wasn’t going to get top-six minutes with the NHL club.

This may not be the last fans see of Hutson this season. And, to say the least, he will have a spot in the lineup next year, much like Savoie this year.

Kapanen Ready to Return to Game Action

Kasperi Kapanen was back in regular rotation at Sunday’s and Monday’s practices. He was skating on a line with Leon Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin. The Oilers are hoping he will bring energy and physicality to that second line, with Jack Roslovic going down on the wing to give some offensive pop to the third line.

Spencer Stastney Ready to Face Old Team

“This will be a special one,” defenseman Spencer Stastney said about getting ready to face his old team, the Nashville Predators on Tuesday. The Oilers will host the Predators tomorrow evening. He said he stays tight with his old teammates and is ready for a fun matchup.

Stastney says the Preds are playing better, but the Oilers need this game to get back on the winning track.

Teams Interested in Andrew Mangiapane

The Oilers have reportedly spoken with the Anaheim Ducks, Detroit Red Wings, and Winnipeg Jets about trading Andrew Mangiapane, seeking a two-way forward in return.

Anaheim and Detroit appear unlikely fits given their deep forward groups, though speculative options such as Ross Johnston, Mason Appleton, or Elmer Söderblom have been mentioned. Winnipeg stands out as the most logical partner, as the struggling Jets are actively searching for scoring and have several two-way forwards who could interest the Oilers.

Insiders Darren Dreger and Pierre LeBrun both suggest Winnipeg is the likeliest destination, while Elliotte Friedman shot down the idea of Mangiapane going to the Ducks for Ryan Strome.
