Oilers Other Rumored Goaltending Target Scores AHL Goal

A rumored goalie trade target of the Edmonton Oilers just scored a goalie goal in the AHL. It’s a prety cool moment.

The Edmonton Oilers made a move to upgrade their goaltending on Friday, but they might not be done. While GM Stan Bowman suggested backup Calvin Pickard is staying with the team, there is talk that the Oilers might pull a Colorado Avalanche from last season and overhaul their entire goaltending situation. One target they might have eyes on is Laurent Brossoit.

Like Jarry, Brossoit also played for the Edmonton Oil Kings. He’s currently trying to make a comeback into the NHL after a serious meniscus surgery injury. He’s currently with the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs, where he just scored a goalie goal.

Brossoit scored an empty-net goal against the Milwaukee Admirals on Friday night after making 33 stops and leading his team to a 5-3 win. He received first-star honors in the game. He has missed more than a year due to knee surgery and there were connections to him possibly being moved to Edmonton as a backup to the backup.

According to Sportsnet, “Brossoit signed a two-year, $6.6 million deal with the Chicago Blackhawks on July 1, 2024. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported recently that the Blackhawks have given Brossoit permission to speak to other teams for a potential trade so he can resume his career in the NHL.”

The tricky part for the Oilers is obviously the money. Having already shuffled things around to make the money work, Brett Kulak and Stuart Skinner were moved to bring in Jarry. If the Blackhawks aren’t willing to retain salary in any trade, where will Edmonton find the $3.3 million it needs per season to have just under $9 million in goalie salaries suddenly?

The realistic answer is that Brossoit is likely no longer on the Oilers’ radar.

Still, congratulations to Brossoit for scoring the goal. Not many goalies have done it in their career, and to be able to do so on his hopeful rise back to the NHL is pretty cool.
