Oilers Lose Promising Forward to Hurricanes In Waiver Claim
The Carolina Hurricanes have claimed Noah Philp off waivers, meaning the Oilers can’t place the promising forward in the AHL.
The Edmonton Oilers took a risk placing Noah Philp on waivers Sunday afternoon. It was a gamble that appears to have backfired. The Carolina Hurricanes have claimed Philp off waivers, meaning the Oilers can’t place the promising forward in the AHL and will not get an asset in return.
Everyone else cleared waivers, but Friedman suggested that Philp was someone who could get plucked away by another team.

Friedman noted on the most recent 32 Thoughts podcast:
“I’ve had people tell me that if he clears waivers — and he might, he might not — this story might not be over. I think there are teams interested in him, but some may want the flexibility to send him down. If you claim a player on waivers, you can’t send him down for a month.”

The Hurricanes apparently aren’t worried about that. They must see a role for him on the NHL roster, something he couldn’t earn with regularity in Edmonton. Part of that was due to a concussion, but as the Oilers get healthier and competition for a forward spot gets tighter, Philp was likely in tough to earn a consistent role.
Philp, 27, has three points in 15 games with the Oilers this season while winning 56.9% of his faceoffs. He has five points in 30 NHL games overall, strong AHL production in Bakersfield and Stockton, and a solid scoring résumé from his time at the University of Alberta and in the WHL.
