Struggling Oilers Forward Compared to ‘Lighter’ Cup-Winning Icon in Bold Take

Jack Michaels says the Edmonton Oilers need more edge, saying they have it as one forward compared to a ‘lighter Brad Marchand’.

The Edmonton Oilers are a team in search of an identity — and longtime play-by-play voice Jack Michaels thinks it might come from one forward who was brought in to score, but could serve as a more effective forward if he’s willing to stir things up.

During a recent discussion on Struddy’s World, Michaels and Jason Strudwick talked about emotion and intensity. Noting that every single Oilers player first pointed out Trent Frederic stepping up to fight Mathieu Olivier despite what felt like an inevitable outcome, Michaels also highlighted Andrew Mangiapane’s ability to make an impact. Calling him “a lighter, less talented version of Brad Marchand,” he believes Mangiapane and the Oilers need toss out the idea that he’s ever going to reach the goal-scoring heights he did in Calgary and focus on being a pest.

The comments weren’t meant to be an insult, rather a compliment that Mangiapane can be an effective annoyance for other teams.

“[Mangiapane’s] a guy you absolutely despise on the other team,” Michaels said. “He’ll drive you insane,” he added. Strudwick then argued that’s what the Oilers need from him right now. Both agreed they need him to bring that energy to this group, as some players are flat.

Michaels noted that sometimes the Oilers lack the spark that comes from getting dirty and pestering. It’s not about fighting; it’s about players who make the game uncomfortable for the opponent and wake up a quiet bench. With Corey Perry gone, the team needs to find a few faces who can step up in that role.

What Oilers Can Bring the Edge Back?

Players like Mattias Ekholm and Darnell Nurse have the physicality to set the tone, while Vasily Podkolzin has shown flashes of bite that could inject energy. What the Oilers could really use is a player who thrives on chaos — someone who frustrates, provokes, and pushes the pace when the team looks too comfortable.

Monday’s fight between Trent Frederic and a Blue Jackets forward served as a reminder that emotion can be contagious. It’s not about the outcome of the fight — it’s about showing up.
