Oilers’ Deal with Quinn Hutson Makes Path to NHL Clear

The Edmonton Oilers have signed Quinn Hutson to an extension, a great deal for the prospect. He has a chance to play full time next seasn.

The Edmonton Oilers have locked up one of their most intriguing young forwards, announcing Monday that Quinn Hutson has signed a two-year contract extension carrying an average annual value of $875,000.

For the Oilers, this deal has nothing but upside.

The 24-year-old has quickly gone from undrafted free agent to legitimate NHL depth option in less than a year. Hutson, who signed with Edmonton after a three-year collegiate career at Boston University, has appeared in six NHL games split between this season and last. His most memorable moment came December 18 in Boston, when he scored his first NHL goal — a game-winner — in a 3-1 victory over the Bruins.

While his NHL sample size is small, Hutson’s work in the AHL has been impossible to ignore. Playing for the Bakersfield Condors during the 2025-26 season, Hutson has erupted for 38 points (23 goals, 15 assists) in just 30 games, leading the team in scoring. He currently sits second in the entire AHL in goals and third in points, while leading all rookies in both categories.

Since November 8, Hutson has been especially dominant, piling up 35 points in 20 games, including 12 multi-point outings and seven multi-goal performances. That stretch earned him AHL Rookie of the Month honors for December after he posted 13 points in eight games.

Originally signed to a two-year entry-level deal in April 2025, the Oilers burned the first year of Hutson’s contract to get him NHL experience late last season. Given his production curve, he’s tracking as a full-time NHL option by the start of the 2026-27 season — if not sooner.

Depending on injuries or trades ahead of the deadline, Hutson will be one of the team’s first call-ups and likely used in a top-nine role. He’s already shown he can make an impact in limited minutes and seems to embrace the idea that he can and will help regardless of his playing time. He’s got that kind of fire in him to succeed.

With a long list of upcoming restricted and unrestricted free agents to manage, this extension gives the Oilers some cost certainty on a player who looks like a reliable, hard-working depth contributor with upside. The two-year deal means that he’ll get a strong look next season, so the Oilers know what they have and can add to his list of NHL regulars producing on a team-friendly deal.
