Oilers Turn to Rugged Forward for Energy Boost, Insiders Explain Call-Up

Insiders break down why the Oilers called up Connor Clattenburg, choosing energy and toughness over AHL scoring leaders.

Choosing to leave Ike Howard, Quinn Hutson, and some others who are arguably more deserving based on their production, the Edmonton Oilers made an eye-opening move by recalling forward Connor Clattenburg from the AHL on Friday. Insiders say the decision has far more to do with identity than point production.

TSN’s Ryan Rishaug broke down the choice on Oilers Now, saying Clattenburg has been forcing his way into the conversation since the moment training camp opened. “He’s been scrapping his way, he’s been working hard, he’s been grinding and grinding,” Rishaug explained. According to him, the organization isn’t looking for another skilled call-up to squeeze into a depth role where he doesn’t fit—Bakersfield already has players sitting at 13, 14, and 15 points who remain untouched. Instead, they wanted someone who brings a jolt of energy, enthusiasm, and physicality.

“Is he NHL ready? Probably not,” Rishaug admitted. “But this sends a signal to everybody. I like it.”

Oilers analyst Bob Stauffer doubled down, calling the move more than just sensible. In response to questions about why scorers like Isaac Howard or Quinn Hutson weren’t chosen, Stauffer didn’t hesitate: “I don’t like it, I love it.”

That sentiment is spreading. Daily Hive’s Oilers writer Preston Hodgkinson admitted he didn’t expect Clattenburg to sniff NHL action this season, especially in his first year of pro hockey. But the timing makes sense. The Oilers are heading into a tough Saturday matchup with the Florida Panthers, and the team has been visibly short on spark.

“Clattenburg has quickly earned an Oilers call-up with his feisty play with the Condors,” Hodgkinson noted. “He definitely will add a spark and drag guys into the fight.” He’ll have to do it in just a small amount of ice time, as no one expects him to play more than a handful of minutes.

For Edmonton, this isn’t about offense. It’s about attitude. And Clattenburg, with his relentless style and willingness to stir things up, appears to be exactly the kind of ingredient the team feels it’s been missing.
