Oilers Acqruire Tristan Jarry in Trade for Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak

The Edmonton Oilers made two trades, acquiring goaltender Tristan Jarry from the Penguins and defenceman Spencer Stastney from Nashville.

The Edmonton Oilers made two trades on Friday, acquiring goaltender Tristan Jarry and forward Samuel Poulin from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Stuart Skinner, Brett Kulak, and a 2029 second-round pick, while also landing defenceman Spencer Stastney from Nashville for a 2027 third-rounder.

Jarry, a two-time NHL All-Star, was rumored to be on Edmonton’s radar this season, but recent trade reports suggested the Oilers didn’t want to trade Skinner to make the deal work. Elliotte Friedman had reported that Edmonton wanted a tandem of Skinner and Jarry. Ultimately, the Oilers did the trade and went with a different idea. Moving Skinner and Kulak in the deal was required to make the money work.

Jarry brings strong career credentials and a solid 2025-26 start. Jarry is at .909 SVP this season and a career .909 SVP. He has two more years left after this season at a cap hit of $5.375 million AAV.

Pittsburgh did not retain any salary on Jarry.

The deal is money in and money out. Kulak (2.75M) and Skinner (2.6M) were both pending UFAs.

Stastney adds depth on the blue line after four seasons with the Predators. Edmonton believes he can be the long-term replacement for Kulak.

Poulin, a former first-round pick, joins Edmonton after productive AHL seasons in Pittsburgh’s system.

When asked if the Oilers thought it was time for something different and things changed in respect to keeping Skinner, Stan Bowman responded that Jarry has had a very strong performance for a number of years and only last season was the blip on his radar. “He’s a big part of the reason their team is off to such a great start. I think watching his performance, it solidified in our mind he is the goalie we had seen for many years.”
