NHL Weekend Rumors: Bruins, Leafs, and Panarin Headlines Heat Up

The NHL weekend rumors include Artemi Panarin trade chatter, Auston Matthews speculation, Bruins notes on Poitras, and deadline sellers.

In today’s NHL Weekend Rumors report, the Boston Bruins may have a young forward’s name popping up in trade chatter, the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to navigate questions around Auston Matthews and their roster core, and Artemi Panarin’s future is quickly becoming one of the biggest storylines to watch as the deadline approaches.

Bruins Watching Poitras Situation Closely

One of the more interesting developments this weekend involves Boston Bruins forward Matthew Poitras. Elliotte Friedman suggested that his recent call-up isn’t necessarily a “showcase,” but admitted it wouldn’t be shocking if something comes from it.

Friedman noted that there’s a sense that both sides may be frustrated.

“You can tell that both sides aren’t 100% happy with each other,” Friedman said, adding that the Bruins may have expected more, while Poitras likely expected a bigger role.

If Boston decides to shake things up, Poitras could become a name to monitor as part of a larger move.

Maple Leafs Rumors: Matthews Commitment Still Strong

Despite Toronto’s struggles, Friedman pushed back hard against speculation that Auston Matthews might want out. “I’ve been hearing there’s been a lot of talk… whether or not he wants to stay,” Friedman said, before adding, “I don’t think that’s a question.”

He believes things would need to get significantly worse before Matthews would ever ask for a trade.

Meanwhile, David Pagnotta reported that Morgan Rielly may be a player the Leafs eventually need to have “a serious conversation” about, though not necessarily before this deadline. Toronto’s upcoming road trip could dictate their next steps.

Panarin Trade Buzz Growing Across the League

Artemi Panarin continues to dominate rumor circles, with multiple insiders reporting serious interest across the NHL. Pierre LeBrun noted that Panarin’s agent has permission to speak with teams directly, with the goal of landing an extension as part of any trade.

Teams linked include LA, Carolina, Washington, Vegas, Utah, and even San Jose. Friedman said the Kings would have a hard time saying no if Panarin “drops on their laps,” while Pagnotta suggested Florida is intriguing because Panarin reportedly wants to go there — though the Panthers may lack the assets.

Blue Jackets, Canadiens, and Other Deadline Wild Cards

Columbus could become a major seller if they fall out of the race. LeBrun reported that calls are already coming in on pending UFAs like Boone Jenner, Charlie Coyle, and Erik Gudbranson, largely because quality centers are scarce.

In Montreal, Pagnotta says the Canadiens are sticking to their plan.

“We’re rolling with what we’ve got,” is the message, unless a deal presents itself that doesn’t hurt their future.

With more sellers emerging than expected, this trade market could shift quickly heading into February.
