NHL Trade Talk Recap Jan.20: Penguins moving players, Oilers McDavid suspended, Canucks failed deal revealed, Maple Leafs trade idea ironic
In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (Jan. 20), a trade proposal has the Toronto Maple Leafs reacquiring Jared McCann from Seattle, sending Easton Cowan, Nick Robertson, and a 2026 first-round pick in exchange. Why doesn’t the trade make sense? In addition, Max Pacioretty missed the Maple Leafs practice due to an upper-body injury.
The jury came in on both Connor McDavid and Tyler Myers. Both received three-game suspensions for cross-checking. How did missed calls by officials spark the controversy? New blue liner John Klingberg is practicing with the Edmonton Oilers. When will he play?
Would the Canucks trade Brock Boeser if they miss the playoffs? Are the Columbus Blue Jackets a potential suitor? As well, Canucks captain Quinn Hughes shared his thoughts on the team’s internal drama. More specifics about the Canucks failed trade of J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers became public. Finally, Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube spoke of his admiration for Lightning coach Jon Cooper. Then his team beat the Lightning 5-3 in tonight’s game.
Penguins Eye Potential Fire Sale as Trade Deadline Approaches
The Pittsburgh Penguins are rumored to be ready to sell players right and left. GM Kyle Dubas is open to moving contracts for picks and prospects. However, the only safe player (for sure) is the great Sidney Crosby. How deep might the cuts be for Pittsburgh?

McDavid and Myers Suspended, But Are the Refs At Fault?

However, there’s some agreement that – at least in part – the referees’ decisions set the tone so the incident would happen. Will the NHL intervene in some way?
Was this suspension harsh? And, in the case of McDavid, is this situation where the league is doing a lousy job of protecting their stars?

The Maple Leafs Should Avoid this Jared McCann Trade Proposal
Surprisingly, a recent Maple Leafs trade proposal suggests moving three prospects to bring Jared McCann back to Toronto from the Seattle Kraken. Why does this proposal risk repeating a past mistake? Why would trading young assets Easton Cowan, Nick Robertson, and a first-round pick for McCann be the height of irony?
