NHL Trade Talk Podcast – Ep 6: Tkachuk for Huberdeau-Plus Trade

Jim and Brooke take a look at the massive trade that sent Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers on Friday for Jonathan Huberdeau, Mackenzie Weegar, Cold Schwindt, and a first-round pick. By all definitions of the word blockbuster, this trade certainly qualifies and there are differing opinions about who actually won the deal.

We break down the trade, talk about contract situations on both sides, try to figure out the motivation from each perspective, and theorize what comes next. Was there more going on in Florida with Huberdeau than meets the eye? There’s some speculation he was waiting on a deal and he’s not entirely pleased with all of this went down.

So too, what happens in Calgary if these two players don’t sign new extensions? Both are pending UFAs after the end of this coming season? What’s the worst-case scenario for the Flames if they need to trade both players and would this deal still be considered a win, as many have pegged it to be on the surface?
