NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup: Canucks, Leafs, Oilers

NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (Feb 1), Canucks have busy day in trades, Maple Leafs John Tavares returning, can Oilers stay hot?

Welcome to today’s NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (February 1). Each morning, we’ll bring you three key NHL stories. Here, you can stay updated on the latest team wins and losses, trade talk, and player news from around the NHL.

In today’s roundup, the Vancouver Canucks were busy yesterday. They made two key trades. However, they lost on the ice. Can the Canucks leverage these trades into a second-half-of-the-season push toward the playoffs? It also looks like the Toronto Maple Leafs are getting a key team member back from an injury. Can ex-captain John Tavares be a difference-maker against the Edmonton Oilers in a late game tonight?

Trade Recap: Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks Swap Players

The Vancouver Canucks were busy yesterday. In their second trade of the day, they picked up Marcus Pettersson and Drew O’Connor from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for forward Danton Heinen and defenseman Vincent Desharnais. Vancouver also sent the Penguins the 2025 top-13 protected first-round pick to Pittsburgh, which they had received from their earlier trade with the New York Rangers.

Stars Defeat Canucks 5-3 After J.T. Miller Trade

On the ice, the Canucks short winning streak ironically ended when they were beaten by the Dallas Stars by a score of 5-3. Roope Hintz and Jason Robertson scored two goals each in the Dallas win. If the Vancouver turmoil was traded away by J.T. Miller moving to the New York Rangers during the game, it didn’t show. The Stars won their fourth straight game, with goalie Jake Oettinger making 26 saves. The truth is that the game was closer than the score looked. The Canucks didn’t play poorly.

John Tavares Set to Return to the Maple Leafs Lineup

It looks as if the Toronto Maple Leafs’ second-line center, John Tavares, will return after missing six games due to an injury. Tavares has had a solid season, averaging 18:17 of ice time, which is his most since the 2019-20 season. He’s seventh in the NHL in high-danger shots and in the 92nd percentile in high-danger goals. He’s been missed by his team as it has plummeted into a three-game losing streak. Can he help the Maple Leafs beat Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and the always-tough Edmonton Oilers on the road tonight?
