NHL Trade Reality Check: Andersson, Pettersson & Stamkos

Learn about Stamkos and his potential trade from Nashville as the team searches for contenders to improve their lineup.

As we move deeper into January, trade chatter is getting louder. The headlines always chase the blockbusters, but that’s rarely where the full picture lives. In this edition of Reality Check, the focus shifts elsewhere. In today’s edition, we look at a longtime veteran in Nashville who could be on the move to a contender. We talk about a big name in Calgary. Finally, what about superstar who is trying to navigate pressure in Vancouver?

Stamkos on the Move?

Believability Rank: Highly Believable

The vibe within the Nashville Predators organization has soured pretty quickly. After making a huge splash just two off-seasons ago, they are now looking to sell off several veteran assets. None looms larger than Steven Stamkos, who appears likely to be moved to a contending team. One destination that stands out is the New Jersey Devils.

The Devils have the young talent to support a veteran scorer, and they desperately need a proven winner with championship pedigree to run their power play. It’s clear that Predators general manager Barry Trotz wants to jumpstart a reset, and moving Stamkos to a contender like New Jersey makes a lot of sense.

Rasmus Andersson Going Anytime Now?

Believability Rank: Highly Believable

The talk about Rasmus Andersson being traded has reached a fever pitch. The Boston Bruins and Vegas Golden Knights are most frequently linked, with the Bruins looking for an extension to be part of any trade, and the Golden Knights confident that Andersson would sign one if traded there.

Andersson appeared emotional after the game on Saturday, almost as if he knew he was being dealt.

Is Pettersson Finally Getting Dealt?

Believability Rank: Less Believable

Usually, a player like Elias Pettersson is considered untouchable, but things have shifted in Vancouver. The front office appears to be heading toward a more complete retool, especially considering they have already traded J.T. Miller and Quinn Hughes within the last calendar year.

Because of that, it feels less like a question of if and more a question of when Pettersson is next. The return would be massive, likely involving first-round picks and a high-end young player, similar to what the Canucks received in the Hughes deal. It may not happen at or before the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline, but there is a growing sense around the league that it eventually will.
