NHL News Rewind: Celebrini & Cooley Explode, Oilers vs Canadiens Chaos
NHL news rewind: Thursday’s action delivered goals, teenage milestones, comeback drama, and record-breaking performances across 12 games.
In today’s NHL news rewind, the NHL featured 12 games and 24 teams on Thursday, and there was plenty to talk about. The high-scoring, entertaining hockey was everywhere, with records being broken, young players showing the league has an incredible future, and icons reminding us that the older guys aren’t bowing out so easily. There were questionable calls and franchise records being broken left and right.
Wild One Between Oilers and Canadiens
The Edmonton Oilers rallied for a 6–5 comeback win over the Montreal Canadiens Thursday, but controversy overshadowed the result. A series of disputed late penalties — a boarding call on Juraj Slafkovsky, a questionable trip against McDavid, and an unsportsmanlike conduct call on Josh Anderson — gave Edmonton power plays that led to Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ tieing the game and Vasily Podkolzin’s game-winner.
Canadiens players and coaches, including Martin St. Louis and Brendan Gallagher, criticized the officiating, calling the calls soft and game-altering. Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch and players acknowledged the advantage but said they simply capitalized.
Celebrini’s Broadway Breakout
On a wild night at Madison Square Garden, 19-year-old Macklin Celebrini scored a hat trick and added two assists in San Jose’s 6–5 overtime win over the New York Rangers. His linemate Will Smith chipped in four points, marking the second time the teenage duo has each recorded four-plus points in the same game.
Celebrini joined Wayne Gretzky, Dale Hawerchuk, and Bryan Trottier as the only teenagers in NHL history with multiple five-point games. Every Sharks goal on Thursday featured a teenager — a glimpse at a franchise finally turning a corner.

Cooley & Keller Fuel Utah’s Rise
In Salt Lake City, Logan Cooley stole the show with a four-point first period — including Utah’s first natural hat trick — as the Mammoth won their fifth straight game.
Clayton Keller tallied twice and became the team’s first 100-point scorer, extending his multi-point streak to four games. Utah’s 6-2-0 start now stands as the best in franchise history.
Goals Everywhere, Legends Still Cooking
There was plenty of scoring on Thursday night, 90 goals in total, 18 game-tying markers, and four games with 11-plus goals. Anaheim’s Mikael Granlund posted a five-point night, Connor McDavid registered his 200th career multi-assist game, and Sidney Crosby tied Mario Lemieux for sixth all-time in multi-point efforts.
The Islanders had at least seven players with multiple points in the same game. That’s the most by any team this season.
