NHL Insider Eliminates Stars As Potential Artemi Panarin Destination

The Stars aren’t a long-term destination for Artemi Panarin.

Artemi Panarin had a long line of contending NHL franchises prepared to trade for him when the New York Rangers announced his availability. Some teams dropped out of those talks when the Russian star confirmed that he’d only waive his no-trade clause if he were also signing an extension. The salary he is demanding has led some teams to consider dropping out, including the Dallas Stars.

The Stars would’ve presented an intriguing destination for Panarin. However, the long-term scope of their roster doesn’t allow for a 4-5-year extension for him, as he is aiming for. Dallas has other priorities on their list, according to Elliotte Friedman on his most recent episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast.

“Dallas, from what I understand, he’s willing to go there, however, as long as it is their goal to sign Jason Robertson, and right now I believe it is, they can’t do this.”

The reasoning is sound. Panarin’s best years are behind him, despite being on pace for 86 points in 78 games this year. Robertson is one of the top American scorers in the league, already scoring over 40 goals twice in his career and is on pace to do it again this season. He is also eight years younger than Panarin.

Stars Could Come Back to Artemi Panarin

It seems like the list of teams willing to acquire Panarin decreased once his extension desires came to light. While the winger had that demand, he isn’t going to go to just any team willing to give him one. Panarin still wants to compete for a Stanley Cup, and if the right team doesn’t give him the offer he wants, he could change course and join a team as a rental.

Panarin should realize that his best chance to win his first Stanley Cup is to open up his options and push the contract talks to the offseason. There will still be tons of teams willing to sign him once the season ends, and a Stanley Cup under his belt will only increase his value. As the trade deadline gets closer, Panarin and his agent could have a change of heart.

If they do, the Central Division arms race to acquire his talents could get exciting. Each of the Stars, Colorado Avalanche, and Minnesota Wild would love to add him, both to increase their forward depth and stop their division rivals from improving.
