New Wrinkle Reaveled in Oilers Potential Pursuit of Jordan Binnington
A lot has been made about the Edmonton Oilers and Jordan Binnington, but there’s a new roadblock in the way of a potential trade.
The Edmonton Oilers’ pursuit of a new goaltender has taken on a life of its own in recent weeks. It first sounded as if the Oilers and Blues were having legitimate discussions about Jordan Binnington, and then it was said they were also very interested in Penguins netminder Tristan Jarry.
However, in the days to follow, all that came out were reasons why Edmonton won’t be able to pull off a deal for one reason or another. When it comes to Binnington in particular, insiders suggested that their recent history with the Blues regarding the offer sheets in 2024 could stand in the way of a trade.
Pair that with his uninspiring play of late, and the rumors have started to die down. While there are already all of those obstacles at play, on Wednesday, we learned of another potential snag in these trade talks as Andy Strickland revealed that the Oilers are actually on Binnington’s no-trade list
“Ok, so from what I understand, Binnington has a limited no-trade, there’s a certain number of teams that are on the list… From what I understand, Edmonton’s on the list of teams he wouldn’t accept a trade to anyway,”
The 32-year-old Binnington is in the fifth season of the six-year, $36 million extension he signed with the Blues back in 2021, which includes said 18-team no-trade list.
Don’t Completely Rule Out Jordan Binnington to the Oilers
While this news just adds on to the several other factors prohibiting Edmonton from landing Binnington, there remains a non-zero chance that it still could happen.

That would, of course, be due to the fact that Binnington could waive his no-trade clause to join the Oilers with the thought of chasing another Stanley Cup.
His no-trade list would have been decided at the time of signing the contract, so things have changed a lot in the almost five years since, including Edmonton going to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals, demonstrating real championship potential that wasn’t there beforehand.
It still feels unlikely to happen, but it can’t be ruled out, especially if things don’t improve in St. Louis and the Oilers continue to poke and prod their way to a deal.
