New Jersey Devils Reportedly Interested in Reunion With Impact Forward

According to insider David Pagnotta, New Jersey has a former Devil on their radar in scouring the trade market.

The New Jersey Devils are off to one of the hottest starts in the NHL, sitting atop the Metropolitan Division and tied for second in the league in points. While it’s still early, the Devils have clearly shown they’re a force to be reckoned with and legitimate Stanley Cup contenders in the Eastern Conference.

Because of that, expect general manager Tom Fitzgerald to be aggressive in bolstering his roster around the current core, and according to insider David Pagnotta, they’ve already kicked tires on bringing back former Devil Blake Coleman.

Here were his comments from the latest episode of the DFO Rundown:

“And we’ve talked about this before; we’ve talked about a guy like Blake Coleman, former Devil now in Calgary with another year on his contract, being a fantastic complementary piece for a Stanley Cup contender, like New Jersey. I think that’s the case. I think he’s on their radar; I think he’s on a few teams’ radars.”

As he mentioned, the 33-year-old Coleman has two years remaining on the six-year, $29.4 million contract he signed to join the Calgary Flames as a UFA in 2021.

Devils Willing to be Bold Ahead of Trade Deadline

While acquiring Blake Coleman would be a very savvy move and undoubtedly an impactful addition for New Jersey, they might be eyeing something bigger.

Pagnotta referred to this during the DFO Rundown, mentioning Dougie Hamilton as a potential cap casualty should the Devils bring in a big-ticket player in the near future.

Hamilton was involved in trade rumors throughout the offseason, and given the talent and depth on the blue line in New Jersey, it feels inevitable that he eventually finds a new home.

It doesn’t appear as if anything is imminent, though, as we creep closer towards the new year and the trade deadline, the Devils will be one of the teams in the spotlight to watch out for.
