Nazem Kadri and the Canadiens: A Real Possibility or Just Smoke?

Discover why Nazem Kadri to the Canadiens is trending as the Montreal Canadiens seek a reliable second-line center for their lineup.

The Montreal Canadiens have been searching for a legitimate second-line center for months, and a surprising name is suddenly back on their radar: Nazem Kadri. According to Sportsnet analyst Nick Kypreos, the veteran forward would reportedly be willing to waive his no-trade clause specifically for two teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens.

For a player with Kadri’s résumé, that alone makes the situation worth watching.

Even at 34, Kadri continues to produce like a top-six center. Last season, he scored 35 goals and posted 67 points in 82 games, following a 75-point campaign the year before. His consistency, competitiveness, and ability to drive offense would immediately stabilize Montreal’s middle six. More importantly, he fits the exact profile the Canadiens have been looking for: a left-shot center capable of anchoring the second line and supporting younger offensive talents.

His presence could be especially valuable for Ivan Demidov, who will be navigating his first full season in North America. Kadri has been praised for his leadership and his ability to elevate the players around him, something a young superstar-in-the-making could benefit from.

Of course, Kadri’s contract complicates things. He still has four years remaining at a $7 million AAV, and Calgary would only move him if they commit fully to a youth reset. That means they’d likely ask for picks and young players, something Montreal has in abundance.

But the Flames’ situation is messy beyond Kadri. Defenseman Rasmus Andersson, set to become a UFA next summer, is reportedly only interested in signing long-term if traded to Vegas. For GM Craig Conroy, that’s another major puzzle to solve.

So is Kadri-to-Montreal realistic? Maybe more than people think. The interest appears mutual; now it comes down to what price the Canadiens are actually willing to pay.
