Does a Canadiens Coach Firing Open the Door for Carey Price?

The Montreal Canadiens announced on Wednesday that they have fired goalie coach Eric Raymond. Could Carey Price join the team?

The Montreal Canadiens announced on Wednesday that they have fired goalie coach Eric Raymond. In a released statement, the organization noted, “Montreal Canadiens President, Hockey Operations Jeff Gorton announced on Wednesday that goalie coach Eric Raymond has been relieved of his duties. Marco Marciano will serve as interim goalie coach until the end of the season.”

Marciano joined the Canadiens organization in 2013 as a video coach with the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs. He became a goalie coach in 2015 and later worked with the Laval Rocket starting in 2017. With nearly 20 years of experience, he’s coached in junior hockey and helped Canada’s women win Olympic gold in 2010.

Given the team’s struggles in goal this season, most fans in the thread supported the decision. “Finally!! Great call,” wrote one fan. “Seems a bit overdue, but better late than never,” wrote another. “It’s the right call, it wasn’t working anymore,” added a fan who had grown tired of seeing things not get better.

With so many promising goalie prospects in the system, if the Canadiens didn’t believe Raymond was the voice to help these netminders develop, it makes sense to see the franchise make a change. In fact, it might be time to build out a dedicated goaltending department — one with multiple coaches and trainers keeping close tabs on each player’s development throughout the season.

Could Change Lead to Carey Price Getting Involved?

That could lead to Carey Price getting involved in goaltender development at some point. Andrew Zadarnowski wrote, “I would like to be the first one to start the ‘Carey Price for goalie coach’ hype machine.

Price is the winningest goaltender in the Montreal Canadiens franchise history.
