The New Jersey Devils have signed goaltender Jacob Markstrom to a two-year extension, the team announced on Friday night. The contract is worth $12 million, with an annual average value of $6 million.

Pierre LeBrun tweeted, “On Markstrom extension with Devils, it was a pretty extensive negotiation. Markstrom camp at first wanted certain amount of money spread out over more years. Important for the Devils to limit it to 2 years. But Devils were fine paying $6M a year for it. Good compromise.”
Markstrom isn’t getting any younger, and he’s struggled through three games this season, but he was very good season. The short-term deal gives the Devils a few options. Still, he’s a big part of the team’s leadership and is extremely highly regarded among his teammates. Some will say this is high for Markstrom and not everyone loves the deal. It was imporant for the organization to get something done.
Over his 16-year career with Vancouver, Florida, Calgary, and New Jersey, Markstrom has posted a 243-214-63 record, a 2.72 GAA, a .908 save percentage, and 24 shutouts. The Devils will now assume the full cap hit, unlike before, when Calgary retained $1.875 million.
