Marchand Receives Slap on Wrist with Strange Unsportsmanlike Fine
Find out why Brad Marchand was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct. Explore his dramatic actions during the game against Buffalo.
Florida’s Brad Marchand has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for unsportsmanlike conduct for his actions during yesterday’s game against Buffalo. The Panthers veteran got involved with Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin, leaping on Dahlin after taking a hard hit and coming away with his helmet. He then proceeded to take it to the penalty box with him and tear it apart, leaving Dahlin to play with a teammate’s lid.
Reactions to the odd sequence were polarizing. Some said that Dahlin deserved what he got after cross-checking a player from behind and then turtling when it came time to pay the consequence. Others noted that Marchand was a bit dramatic and overreacted. Others just thought the entire thing was widly entertaining.

At the end of the day, the fine isn’t going to mean much to Marchand. He just recently re-signed a six-year extension with the Florida Panthers worth $31.5 million. That brings his total NHL contracts to well over $100 million.
Neither the Sabres nor the Panthers are in action on Sunday.
