Maple Leafs Await Word on Nylander’s Injury Status After Loss to Sabres

William Nylander left Friday’s game after a hard cross-check; Coach Craig Berube is waiting on his injury status for the Maple Leafs.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are holding their breath after star forward William Nylander exited Friday night’s 5–3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres in the third period and did not return.

Nylander, who leads the team with 14 points (3 goals, 11 assists) through eight games, absorbed a hard cross-check from Jason Zucker and appeared shaken up on the play. Head coach Craig Berube offered no substantial update postgame, saying only that the forward needs “more evaluation” and that his availability for Saturday’s rematch remains uncertain.

“Maybe,” Berube said when asked if Nylander might miss the next game. “Yeah, we’ll see.”

Brad Treliving confirmed the Maple Leafs will look at trades to bolster their defense and he talked about Nylander’s negotiations.

The injury comes at a difficult time for Toronto, now 3-4-1 and searching for consistency early in the season. Berube recently moved Nylander onto Auston Matthews’ line in hopes of jumpstarting the offense. “It’s not ideal having your two top players on the same line,” TSN analyst Mike Johnson admitted earlier this week. However, the Leafs are running out of options, and Berube is not thrilled that the Leafs can’t seem to sustain any offensive zone pressure.

Goaltender Anthony Stolarz emphasized Nylander’s value to the lineup after Friday’s defeat. “You look at the way he played tonight—up and down the ice, checking and getting that goal,” Stolarz said. “He’s been an integral part of our team so far this year. Hopefully, he’s okay and back with us tomorrow.”

Nylander has been involved in 56% of Toronto’s goals this season, underlining just how crucial he’s been to the Leafs’ attack.

His status for Saturday’s game remains day-to-day pending further evaluation.
