Insider: Maple Leafs Won’t Rule Out Trading Cowan For ‘Star’
It would take a lot, but the Toronto Maple Leafs might be open to trading Easton Cowan for a top-tier star.
According to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos, the possibility that the Toronto Maple Leafs might be ready to (or forced to) move Easton Cowan in a trade this season is real. While the team wouldn’t want to do so, if there’s a move to make and Cowan is the trade piece that gets it done, it’s not off the table.
And, it won’t be the first time the Maple Leafs have dangled the top-end prospect in trade discussions.
Kypreos writes in a recent column:
“Last year, Easton Cowan was pushed as a trade chip in an effort to try and obtain Brayden Schenn, but Cowan’s going to be hard to put into play again this season. However, depending on what the return is, we can’t rule out the possibility.”
Who Would the Maple Leafs Be Targeting That Cowan Might Be In Play?
Kypreos writes that one big idea circulating is a potential swing involving Dallas forward Jason Robertson. Contract talks have been difficult, with Robertson reportedly seeking over $12 million per year — a number the Stars may struggle to meet. Toronto could afford it, but the acquisition cost would be massive, likely involving top prospects and making it more of an offseason move than a deadline deal.

Separately, goalie demand around the league is high. If Anthony Stolarz returns healthy, he could become a valuable trade chip for the Leafs. The Stars don’t need him, which would likely rule Stolarz out of being part of any package for Robertson. But, it would clear up some cap space if Toronto was trying to figure a way to meet Robertson’s extension ask.
