G Cayden Primeau has been claimed off waivers by the Carolina Hurricanes.
Primeau, 26, appeared in three games for the Leafs this season, posting a 2-1-0 record with a 4.30 goals-against average and an .838 save percentage. Originally claimed by Toronto in early October while Joseph Woll was away on personal leave, Primeau served as Anthony Stolarz’s backup for most of the past month.
With Woll now nearing a return — he’s currently on a conditioning stint with the Marlies — the Leafs placed Primeau on waivers earlier in the week. Carolina, which traded for and signed Primeau this summer, reclaimed him and can now assign him directly to AHL Chicago, as originally intended.

The Primeau Experiment Over for the Maple Leafs
The move clears room for Hildeby’s recall, giving Toronto a temporary backup until Woll rejoins the active roster. Stolarz spoke positively about Woll’s return, noting, “It’s great to have him back… that competitive nature he brings to the team is huge.”
For Toronto, the brief Primeau stint acted as a one-month loan that maintained goalie depth — and ended with the roster returning to its original form.
In other Maple Leafs news, Chris Tanev was back on the ice one week after being stretchered off in Philadelphia. “Yeah, he’s doing well,” said fellow Maple Leafs defenseman Brandon Carlo. “Every time that I’ve talked to him since, he’s seemed just like himself, so that’s what you like to see. He’s got bright eyes and a bushy tail in the morning. He’s a great player. He’s a huge part of this group.”
