Maple Leafs Offer In-Game Injury Update on Morgan Rielly

Toronto Maple Leafs defenesman Morgan Rielly did not return to Saturday’s game after he suffered an upper body injury.

The Toronto Maple Leafs posted on X, “D Morgan Rielly will not return to tonight’s game (upper body).”

Rielly was officially ruled out prior to the start of the third period, though it remains unclear when or how the injury occurred. The 31-year-old blueliner has seven goals and 31 points on the season and remains the longest-tenured player on Toronto’s roster.

This is not news the Maple Leafs needed as they are hanging onto their season by a thread. He played just 12:34 in the game.

Chris Tanev is sidelined indefinitely, further thinning Toronto’s blue line as the club prepares for games against the Calgary Flames on Monday and the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday before the Olympic break.

Rielly has also been navigating a challenging season on the ice, finding himself on for a league-worst 63 goals against at five-on-five. Reactions to his play online on Saturday were not glowing. One fan wrote, “Looks like a lost soul out there.” Another noted, “I hope he gets better, but I also hope that he stays out of the lineup permanently because he’s such a passenger.”

Rielly is aware he’s not having his best season. “When you’re going through a tough stretch, your confidence waivers,” he said. “But ultimately, that’s not an excuse. Guys have to go out there and play within structure, play hard, and execute.” It will be interesting to see how long he’s out for.

With Toronto trending toward missing the playoffs for the first time in a decade, Rielly’s name has surfaced in trade speculation, making his health status an important storyline to monitor in the days ahead.
