Maple Leafs Offer Important Injury Update on Chris Tanev

Get the latest Chris Tanev injury update. Find out about his status following a collision during the game against the Flyers.

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Sunday that defenceman Chris Tanev was evaluated overnight after being taken out of Saturday’s game on a stretcher. He was sent to a nearby medical facility in Philadelphia for precautionary purposes, but has been discharged and will return home to Toronto.

As scary as the incident was, this sounds like great news. It’s unclear how much time Tanev will miss, but the biggest concern is his overall health, as you never like to see a player go down like that.

Tanev collided with Matvei Michkov of the Flyers during the third period. As Tanev was skating backward and Michkov was moving into position, the two men bumped into each other, and Tanev took the worst of it, seeing that he had no idea the collision was coming. Michkov was assessed a two-minute penalty for interference. That said, most feel this was purely accidental. Tanev backed up without seeing Michkov, who tried to avoid contact, but the two collided as Tanev turned. Absolutely nothing malicious about it.

“He’s moving, and I think he’ll be all right. But he’s getting some tests done right now. We’ll know more in a little while,” coach Craig Berube said, following Toronto’s 5-2 win. “We’ll know soon. He might be coming home with us.”

This was Tanev’s first full game back from an injury. He had missed 11 days and four games with a concussion sustained on October 21st.

“Very unfortunate,” Nick Robertson said when asked about his teammate. “I’ll be praying for him. You know, he’s come back from a head injury, and you don’t wanna see something like that.”
