The Maple Leafs Keep Letting Good Young Players Leave: Why?
Maple Leafs keep letting young talent slip through their fingers—Pontus Holmberg thrives elsewhere while Toronto fans sigh yet again.
If you’ve watched the Toronto Maple Leafs long enough, you start to notice a pattern—and not a good one. For whatever reason, this team keeps whiffing on young talent. And the latest example that’s driving fans up the wall? Pontus Holmberg.
Pontus Holmberg barely got a real shot in Toronto, walked for nothing, and is now doing just fine somewhere else. A classic Maple Leafs gaffe.
Holmberg’s “Nothing to See Here” Exit… and His Glow-Up
Holmberg’s time in Toronto was basically a shrug. He never stuck, never got much runway, and then the Leafs chose not to qualify him. Off he went. The Tampa Bay Lightning jumped to sign him.
And, fast-forward, he’s in Tampa, playing regular minutes, putting up career numbers. Then, just to twist the knife, he’s suiting up for Team Sweden at the Olympics. Maple Leafs fans almost have to hope he gets some shifts with William Nylander. Right now, Holmberg is skating next to Gabriel Landeskog and Alex Wennberg like it’s no big deal.
Nine goals, eight assists, and a plus-9 in 48 games. That’s solid production with the Lightning. Better than solid, considering how he was used in Toronto.
What stings even more is his role. Sweden has him doing all the annoying but important stuff. He’ll kill penalties, play solid defence, and insert energy into the lineup. Stuff the Maple Leafs could’ve used this year?
But funny thing. Tampa saw something Toronto didn’t. Again.

So… What’s the Bigger Deal with the Maple Leafs?
This isn’t really about Holmberg alone. It’s about the bigger pattern. The Maple Leafs never seem to have trouble giving the superstars the appreciation they deserve. Auston Matthews and William Nylander get their fair share, and they’re great. But when it comes to the middle-six grinders, the depth guys who make a good team an actual team, Toronto somehow keeps misreading the room.
Holmberg could’ve easily fit into the Maple Leafs’ lineup this season. Two-way, honest shifts, doesn’t cheat on plays. In fact, he has that mythological DNA that the Maple Leafs were hunting for during the off-season. And they let it go for nothing. Now, he’s thriving somewhere that actually seems to get what he brings.
And that’s the part that’s so frustrating. He didn’t suddenly become a different player the moment he left. Someone else just put him in the spot where he could flourish.
If Maple Leafs Fans Think This Is the Wake-Up Call, They’re Likely Wrong
It’s hard watching a player you drafted succeed somewhere else when you’ve spent months wondering why your own bottom six looks like it’s out of ideas. Good for the Lightning. They saw the potential and handed him a real role.
Maple Leafs fans are left doing that familiar little sigh we’ve perfected over the years. Hopefully, this whole Holmberg thing is enough of a nudge for the Maple Leafs to actually take their young guys seriously. Develop them. Keep them. Give them a chance before tossing them aside.
Right now, the Maple Leafs are flipping the lights on and off while other teams are using their cast-offs to win awards.
