Maple Leafs’ Best Bargain Might Be Their Most Unlikely Star
At age 35, John Tavares is putting up career-best numbers while costing the Toronto Maple Leafs far less than expected.
John Tavares is off to a start few could have predicted — and it’s making Toronto Maple Leafs fans wonder if they’re getting the steal of the NHL season. Whether the pressure is off because of his contract or the stress of being the captain has been removed, Tavares has been Toronto’s best player this season, and he’s being paid like a depth guy.
At age 35, Tavares is on pace for 41 goals and 105 points, which would smash his previous career-best 88 points and 47-goal season in his first year as a Leaf. No one saw this coming, maybe not even Tavares.
What makes this even more remarkable is the cost. With a $4.38 million cap hit, nearly 300 players make more, but few offer the same consistent output, professionalism, and leadership that Tavares provides every night. Among the top 15 NHL scoring leaders, Tavares has the third-lowest salary, bested only by Macklin Celebrini (San Jose) and Leo Carlsson (Anaheim).
Not only is he producing on the ice, but Tavares’ consistency as a leader, dedication to being in shape, and ability to mentor younger players have become significant assets for the Leafs. He could have been choked about making too little or losing his captaincy. Instead, he passed on making double his salary in free agency, showed up to camp ready and accepted a lesser role, becoming a dependable third-line center.

During Wednesday’s win over Utah, Tavares played just 15 minutes and five seconds — less than Nicholas Roy. Playing fewer minutes has been a theme this season — which could be helping Tavares’ game.
Entering the 500-goal club this week, he’s proving that elite production isn’t limited by age or cap hit. While the team has struggled to remain consistent, Tavares hasn’t. He’s providing superstar value at a bargain, reminding fans why he’s one of the most respected leaders in the league.
