Evgeni Malkin is said to be OK, despite a strange reaction on the Pittsburgh Penguins bench. It appeared Malkin seriously injured his shoulder in an unexpected sequence, immediately clutching his shoulder and hunching over. The camera cut away, but when it cut back, Malkin was on one knee and seemed to be in serious pain.

Malkin has a history of shoulder issues, so his collapsing to the ground in pain was not a good sign.

Malkin Reportedly Not Injured

Following the game, Penguins head coach Dan Muse provided an update on Malkin. “No, there’s nothing there,” said the coach, when reporters asked what it was they had witnessed. Josh Yohe of The Athletic posted on X, “The Penguins have indicated that they believe Geno Malkin is ok. It looks like St. Ivany is going to be out a while with a hand injury. And only three Eastern teams — Tampa, Detroit and Carolina — have more points than the Penguins, who are now 26-14-11.”

Malkin has 40 points (13G + 27A) in 36 games played this season and is looking for another contract with the Penguins. The organization has said they will talk to him over the Olympic break, but has also indicated they want to move on. Few expected Malkin to be this productive. If there is an injury, however, the hope is that it’s not long-term or a lingering issue that will impact his season, or that it will prompt the Penguins to rethink their position on a new deal.
