Kevin Bahl is a Massive Loss for the Calgary Flames
On Saturday night, Calgary Flames defenseman Kevin Bahl took an awkward hit from Minnesota’s Jakub Lauko, forcing him to leave the game. Bahl was unable to play in Sunday’s matchup against the Winnipeg Jets, a disappointing loss for the Flames.
Bahl has been enjoying a phenomenal season, and a long-term injury would be a significant blow to a team battling for a playoff spot. Reports indicate that Tyson Barrie has been called up as reinforcement, with Bahl expected to miss tonight’s game against the Washington Capitals.
The Flames will be hoping for a quick recovery from Bahl, whose steady presence on the blue line has been a key factor in their success this season.
Kevin Bahl Has Fit In
Bahl was acquired in the Jacob Markstrom deal in the offseason. Some people questioned the trade at first, thinking the Flames could have gotten more for their starting goalie. However, Bahl has made a significant impact on the Flames blueline.
Bahl plays top-line minutes alongside Rasmus Andersson, and their partnership has been a key factor in Andersson’s strong performance this season. Both defensemen have had solid campaigns, with Bahl already setting a new career high in points with 14. With just under half the season remaining, Bahl has the opportunity to continue his success—unless his injury prevents him from doing so.
A long-term injury to Bahl would be a worst-case scenario for the Calgary Flames. His absence would significantly weaken the defensive core. While Jake Bean has had a decent first season with the Flames, he doesn’t provide the same physical presence and defensive stability that Bahl brings. Losing Bahl for an extended period would put additional pressure on Calgary’s defense as they continue their playoff push.
Flames Defensive Core Questions
The Calgary Flames have an interesting defensive core. They signed Barrie to a one-year deal after his PTO, but have rarely used him at all this season. He could be a great quarterback for the second powerplay unit of the Flames. Yes, he has aged, but his time as the Edmonton Oilers power play quarterback cannot be ignored.
Daniil Miromanov has struggled recently and was on the wrong side of a highlight-reel goal from Kyle Connor. With his poor play and Kevin Bahl’s injury, Barrie should get another shot with the big club. His veteran presence would serve well at a time like this as the Calgary Flames continue to battle the injury bug.
The Flames continue to push for a wildcard spot with an exciting matchup tonight. Andrew Mangaipane will make his first return to Calgary since being traded to the Washington Capitals in the offseason.
