Jets and Oilers Still Being Linked in Andrew Mangiapane Trade

The Winnipeg Jets are emerging as a team to watch in respect to an Andrew Mangiapane trade with the Oilers.

Trade chatter around Andrew Mangiapane is starting to heat up, and the Winnipeg Jets are emerging as a team to watch. Elliotte Friedman was the latest to bring up the Jets name again, noting on Friday’s 32 Thoughts podcast that the loss by Winnipeg to Edmonton on Thursday has that team asking serious internal questions.

Mangiapane was a healthy scratch again for the Edmonton Oilers, and a fragile Jets team allowed Edmonton to storm back in the second and third period to erase a 3-1 lead and ultimately win 4-3, bringing the Jets’ losing streak to 11 straight. They need to do something.

According to sources, multiple teams have begun kicking tires on Mangiapane, with Winnipeg and San Jose among the most serious early suitors. It is believed that a few others are monitoring the situation as well, but the Jets might be the most eager to make a move to spark their roster.

The sense is that Edmonton can move Mangiapane. The bigger question isn’t if a trade can happen, but how it comes together. Who is involved, and what is the timing? Does this happen before the Olympic roster freeze on February 4 or do both sides wait until afterward?

The Jets Might Want to Move Now and Make a Shake-Up Trade

Winnipeg’s interest, in particular, is worth noting. The Jets have been active in exploring ways to add scoring depth and flexibility. Now, it’s about stopping the bleeding. While Mangiapane isn’t likely the difference-maker that turns the Jets’ season around, his versatility could make him an appealing target if the price is right. And, the price is probably right as the Oilers want to move off his salary.

For now, there’s no clear timeline on when a deal could materialize. But with interest building and Mangiapane’s role in flux, this appears to be gaining traction rather than cooling off.
