Jakub Dobeš Addresses Chatter After Emotional Postgame Moment

Jakub Dobeš opens up after his emotional postgame moment following the Canadiens’ loss to New Jersey, addressing some of the critiscm.

Montreal Canadiens rookie goaltender Jakub Dobeš showed a different kind of toughness this week when he broke down after a loss and opened himself up to criticsm for people who argue he’s too emotionally invested and he won’t be able to sustain that kind of self-pressure throughout an NHL season. After an emotional postgame scene where he was seen in tears following a loss to the New Jersey Devils, the 22-year-old netminder addressed the media again and spoke candidly about how much the moment meant to him.

“There’s not any disappointment at all,” Dobeš said. “After that, I think I was fine on the plane. Going back to that, I want to close it. You guys don’t need to worry about me at all. Just some games mean more to someone than the others, so I really took it personal that game.”

Dobeš, who had entered the matchup 6–0–0 on the season, admitted that his frustration stemmed from facing a team that had beaten him before. “They beat me last year and I promised myself it wasn’t going to happen again,” he said. “It kinda happened the same way… I should have probably taken a couple more minutes to myself.”

Despite the viral attention surrounding his tears, Dobeš insisted there’s no lingering issue in the locker room. “Every game I play in this jersey I take it with pride and a lot of heart. I’m naturally just a more emotional guy than others… The guys had fun with it. There’s no problem whatsoever.”

Head coach Martin St. Louis defended his goalie’s passion: “These guys don’t come to the NHL by luck. They’re programmed in a way that brings them to levels not many people attain. That’s how he deals with things. We will support him.”

For a young goalie still finding his footing in the NHL, Dobeš’ emotions only underscore what Canadiens fans already love about him — he cares, deeply.
