Insider Wonders if Bill Guerin’s Next Move Could Be Sidney Crosby
Quinn Hughes was just the start — could Bill Guerin be eyeing another massive move?
Bill Guerin has never been shy about making bold moves since becoming general manager of the Minnesota Wild in 2019. From the buyouts of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, to the Kirill Kaprizov mega-extension, and most recently, of course, the blockbuster trade to acquire Quinn Hughes.
The superstar defenseman said it best — kudos to Guerin for, quote-unquote, “sacking up” to get the deal done. In a league where excuses are often made to justify a lack of activity, it’s refreshing to see the Wild’s GM continue to be aggressive and swing for the fences.
Given that track record, there’s no reason to expect Guerin to stop at Hughes, which has led TSN insider Chris Johnston to wonder whether his next target could be a former teammate in Sidney Crosby.
“I don’t know what centers are going to be truly available, so it’s hard to get going. But, if that guy in Pittsburgh ever becomes available, I will remind you he was a friend of Bill Guerin’s and a teammate who won a Stanley Cup once upon a time. It’s way too premature, that’s not a rumor, that’s a like, putting one and one, one plus one equals two together,”
The 38-year-old remains extremely productive, having tallied 34 points (19 goals, 15 assists) in 31 games so far this season. He is in year one of the two-year, $17.4 million extension he signed with the Penguins just prior to the 2024-25 campaign.
Will Sidney Crosby Ever Leave Pittsburgh?
Minnesota needs help down the middle of the ice, and Crosby would be a tremendous fit to fill that need. However, as will always be the case, the Penguins captain’s loyalty to the only franchise he’s ever known is a major obstacle.

Speculation about Sidney Crosby pondering a future outside of Pittsburgh reached a fever pitch this summer, but he quickly put an end to it, reiterating his desire to stay while making it clear he was growing tired of having to answer the question.
The Penguins’ hot start to the 2025–26 season helped quiet the noise, but after losing five straight games — blowing massive third-period leads — that chatter could quickly resurface if things continue to spiral.
It still feels unlikely that we reach a point this season where Crosby seriously considers leaving. Nonetheless, the idea of him teaming up with Hughes, Kaprizov, and longtime friend Guerin down in the State of Hockey is undeniably fascinating.
