Insider Updates the Senators Ready to Take “Big Swing” Rumors
Get the scoop on the Senators big swing trade rumors as Ottawa explores potential deals in the trade market.
There were rumors this week that the Ottawa Senators might be exploring the trade market and prepared to go all-in on a deal that would surprise fans and other teams. It sounds like the speculation got a bit carried away.
Pierre LeBrun noted in a recent article for The Athletic, “I don’t think there’s anything imminent, but it’s fair to say the Ottawa Senators have made sure to do their due diligence with teams that have indicated they’re ready to listen on players.”

So, while it sounds like the Senators are checking out the market and they are open to making a move, that blockbuster deal some were expecting might not be coming.
LeBrun added, “But, as TSN colleague Darren Dreger said in a Sens intermission panel last Friday, I would also downplay the narrative that’s out there that Ottawa is ready to take a big swing.” He notes that Senators are more about “trying to hit more singles, as GM Steve Staios has been able to do with other solid moves over the past year.”

LeBrun does believe if a chance to upgrade the top six or top nine opens up before March 6, Staios won’t hesitate. He’s already gauging who’s available and what the cost looks like.
What Might the Senators Be Looking For?
It’s unclear what kind of calls the GM is making, but Staios could be focused on finding a defenseman, not another forward. The Senators sit 13th in goals for despite a brutal power play, but they’re 21st in goals against — that’s the real problem. Staios has made some sharp moves, but given how injury-prone Thomas Chabot and Artem Zub are, the team might want reinforcements. With both out, the lack of depth has shown at times.
