Tavares’ Contract Situation: Insider Drops Key Update

David Pagnotta provides a contract update on the Maple Leafs’ negotiations with veteran forward John Tavares.

The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta has given an update on the Toronto Maple Leafs’ contract negotiations with John Tavares. As per Pagnotta, the Maple Leafs and John Tavares are talking about an extension.

Here’s what he had to say:

The Maple Leafs and John Tavares are talking about an extension, but neither side is rushing. Both want a deal done, and while Tavares will be a UFA in July, it’s unclear if an agreement will happen during the season. Most expect a -year deal worth $6–7.5 million per season, but talks remain open and flexible.

Why the Maple Leafs Should Extend Tavares

The Maple Leafs should prioritize extending John Tavares—he has proven this season that he still has plenty left in the tank. At 33, Tavares averages nearly a point per game, amassing an impressive 448 points in 471 games with the team. This is a notable marker, particularly given the challenges of aging in the NHL. While there have been concerns about his ability to maintain his performance as he gets older, Tavares continues to demonstrate that he can deliver consistently on a nightly basis.

The biggest talking point, of course, will be the cap hit. Pagnotta suggested that Tavares could seek a deal in the $6-7.5 million range per season. Understandably, not all members of Leafs Nation will be thrilled with that figure. However, when you consider what Tavares contributes both on and off the ice, it’s clear why the front office should prioritize locking him up sooner rather than later. Doing so could prevent his asking price from rising if his performance continues to improve.

Yes, the cap situation for the Maple Leafs is always a concern. But finding a way to make this work might be worth it. For the Maple Leafs, it would be even more ideal to bring the asking price down below $6 million per season. Somewhere around $5.5 million for three more seasons would be a great fit for both parties.
