Insider: Maple Leafs Would “Love to Get” Islanders D-Man in Trade
If the New York Islanders elect to move on from Scott Mayfield this season, the Toronto Maple Leafs want in, according to a source.
According to Nick Kypreos, the Toronto Maple Leafs will be all over New York Islanders Scott Mayfield if he becomes available at this season’s NHL Trade Deadline. Noting, “There is the consideration that he has a no-trade clause, so it would require him to sign off on a move, but if Lou Lamoriello wants to move Mayfield, there will be a market.” Kypreos adds, “The Maple Leafs would love to get this player.”
As part of his recent Trade Bait board, the NHL insider and Sportsnet analyst wrote:
“Signed through the 2029-30 season with a $3.5 million cap hit, Mayfield is a big, right shot defender who kills penalties, blocks shots and is physical. Just the type of defenceman teams seek out at the trade deadline..”
This is also the kind of player GM Brad Treliving loves. He has reshaped the team’s blue line over the summer, opting for more size and physicality with players who can defend. Mayfield is 6’5″ and weighs 215 pounds. Size is not an issue.

Would Mayfield Be a Fit for the Maple Leafs?
Mayfield is not a rental, but that’s not a huge concern for the Leafs. They are open to both short-term and long-term options if they make sense and aren’t too cost-prohibitive.
This season, he has averaged 17:39 per game, two goals and five assists on the season. The Islanders are likely to be sellers as they sit well outside the wild card race with a record 17-19-7.
It’s not clear what the Leafs would have to give up or what the Islanders might ask for. If salary is retained in any deal, the ask could be significant.
