Maple Leafs Poised to Pursue Distinct Top-6 Forward

NHL insider David Pagnotta believes the Maple Leafs are looking to trade for a top-six winger with a distinct playing style.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly looking to add a winger to their top six, someone who can complement John Tavares and bring some extra edge to the lineup. If they can’t find the right second-line center, they’ll likely stick with John Tavares in the middle and add a left winger who can score, play physically, and be defensively responsible alongside Tavares and William Nylander.

According to David Pagnotta from the Fourth Period, the Maple Leafs are looking for a player with a bit of a physical edge and solid defensive awareness—someone who can help round out Tavares’ line.

As Pagnotta mentioned, Nylander is currently on the top line with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner. But that likely won’t last forever. This means Tavares and Nylander will most likely be 2/3 of a line along with whoever they acquire to go with them.

Tavares and Nylander are having very strong seasons, and while they are key offensive drivers, they could use a winger who can not only support their play offensively but also add a bit of grit and stability in the defensive zone. A player who can win puck battles, finish checks, and play smart, responsible hockey might be the missing piece the Maple Leafs need to take that next step.

Maple Leafs Could Add Someone Edgy That Gets Berube’s Style of Hockey

Adding a player with an edge could also free up some of the pressure on the rest of the team. It’ll allow Tavares, Nylander, Marner, and Matthews to focus on offensive opportunities without constantly worrying about the physical toll.

With their sights set on a long playoff run, it’s clear the Maple Leafs aren’t just looking for talent—they’re seeking a player that can fit into Brad Treliving and Craig Berube‘s style of hockey.
