Insider: Maple Leafs Forward a “Nice Fit” Trade for Oilers

Bob Stauffer and Elliotte Friedman both agreed that Bobby McMann being traedd to the Edmonton Oilers would be a nice fit.

Bob Stauffer of Oilers Now and Elliotte Friedman discussed all things trades and possible moves ahead of the NHL Olympic roster freeze. One name that came up was Bobby McMann out of Toronto. Interestingly, both thought McMann would be a great fit in Edmonton.

Stauffer said, “I love McMann,” said Stauffer. Both pointed out that McMann was an Alberta-born player. Friedman said he was a “fast, competitive guy” and then added, “He’d look good on your roster.” He noted, “I like the way he plays. I think he’d be a really nice fit.”

Stauffer pointed out that at a $1.35 million cap hit, because of the price point, it would take a second-round pick and a prospect to make that deal. “Top nine guy all day. Cheap cheap.” Noting that Kiefer Sherwood got a lot of attention because of his low cap hit, “my guess is it would be a second and a prospect minimum for him.”

McMann lacks trade protection and is a pending UFA. He could be brought in as a rental and if things go well, both sides could look at a potential extension.

Would McMann Sign with the Oilers If Traded to Edmonton?

It is presumed that McMann would be thrilled if he were traded to Edmonton.

Back in March of 2024, when McMann had a big game against Edmonton, he admitted, “I was an Oilers fan growing up. Maybe a little extra juice in the legs today playing against the Oilers.” The Leafs ended up beating the Oilers 6-3 that night.

What if McMann were an Oiler? A 29-year-old winger with 16 goals this season and coming off a 20-goal campaign in 2024-25 in Edmonton’s top nine? It sure sounds like a nice idea.
