Buffalo Sabres
Insider Believes Owen Power is in Need of a Fresh Start
Owen Power and the Buffalo Sabres are struggling, so could both sides benefit from a parting of ways?
The Buffalo Sabres have been playing a better brand of hockey lately, yet they’re still dead last in the Eastern Conference with an 8-9-4 record, and it’s hard to envision them surging past any of the teams in front of them.
With how tight the standings are, it remains plausible that they hang around in the wild-card race all season long, but at the same time, that isn’t good enough for an organization that’s missed the playoffs the last 14 years in a row, so major change could be on the horizon.
While Tage Thompson has generated buzz in the rumor mill, that feels like a move that would be made if the Sabres truly bottom out again in 2025-26. That’s obviously not their goal, but if they want to shake up their roster and remain competitive, insider Frank Seravalli believes Owen Power could be an option, and that he could really use a change of scenery himself.
“You’ve got some really talented players, and Owen Power, I think, is the poster child for me, because I think he can be really good, and he’s languishing, and a lot of the guys in Buffalo, they don’t see light at the end of the tunnel. So it’s been pretty bleak,”
The 23-year-old Power is in the second season of the seven-year, $58.45 million extension he signed with the Sabres in 2023.
There Would Be Massive Interest in Owen Power
As Seravalli mentioned, Power’s play has plateaued, and his first 21 games of 2025-26 haven’t been pretty, with just seven points (two goals, five assists) and -5 rating while seeing his minutes down to a career-low 20:48 per game.
That being said, this is a former first-overall pick (2021), so the talent is there, and we’ve seen plenty of examples where players leave Buffalo and go on to reach their potential elsewhere.

It’s very possible the same could happen to Power, and that should lead almost every team in the league to check on his availability if the Sabres continue to struggle and look to make changes.
