If Insider Report Is True, Maple Leafs Should Be All Over Travis Konecny

If Travis Konecny is even remotely available, the Toronto Maple Leafs should be in hot pursuit.

There are going to be a lot of difficult conversations and decisions to be made over the next several weeks for the Toronto Maple Leafs. A roller-coaster 2025–26 season thus far has culminated in them sitting six points out of a wild-card spot heading into the Olympic break, with a legitimate case to be made that they should buy, sell, or even do a bit of both.

As a result, not only are pending UFAs of their own—Bobby McMann in particular—circulating in the rumor mill, but the Maple Leafs have also been connected to quality players with term remaining on their contracts, one notably being Jordan Kyrou. Those can be hard to find, though a recent nugget of information suggests another option that fits the mold in Travis Konecny could also be available for the right offer.

While he didn’t include Konecny on his latest trade board, Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos did specifically mention him in the introduction as a name to watch if Flyers GM Daniel Brière decides to shake things up.

Kypreos wrote:

“I’m not putting any Philadelphia Flyers on the board quite yet, but I’m hearing they are willing to swing big, if not now, then certainly this summer. When that comes to pass, the biggest pieces they could move out in a blockbuster are Owen Tippett and Travis Konecny,”

The 28-year-old Konecny is in the midst of another productive season, having tallied 54 points (22 goals, 32 assists) through 55 games played. He’s in year one of the eight-year, $70 million extension signed with the Flyers in 2024.

Travis Konecny Would Be an Ideal Fit for the Maple Leafs

As much as they won’t want to admit it, the Maple Leafs are still searching for a Mitch Marner replacement, and a player like Konecny could not only fill that role but also bring a completely different style of game—one that Toronto desperately needs.

Hovering right around point-per-game production for four straight seasons on a Philadelphia team with limited high-end talent outside of him is impressive on its own. Add in the edge and tenacity he brings every night, and it’s easy to see why nearly every team in the league—especially the Maple Leafs—would have interest in the two-time All-Star.

The London, Ontario native has recently voiced his frustration about yet another season likely ending without making the playoffs, so what better way to return to the postseason than by joining his hometown team alongside superstars Auston Matthews and William Nylander?

Acquiring Konecny would undoubtedly come at a high cost, though GM Brad Treliving’s lack of job security might force him to be more aggressive. That could mean parting with a top prospect or two like Easton Cowan and/or Ben Danford, along with draft capital or even a goaltender—something the Flyers are in desperate need of—in Anthony Stolarz or Dennis Hildeby.

That may be too steep a price for some, but if the Maple Leafs truly want to retool around Matthews and Nylander with the goal of a quick return to contention, this is the type of bold move they seriously need to explore.

Hopefully Konecny won’t mind losing for the next 5+ years in round 1 of the playoffs with this “core”!
