Host Scoffs at Maple Leafs and Oilers Problem-for-Problem Trade

Don’t expect the Oilers to run and offer Mangiapane in a trade for Matias Maccelli from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

While it’s clear the Edmonton Oilers might have to take on a new problem to get rid of one of their own, don’t expect GM Stan Bowman to run and make a trade for Matias Maccelli from the Toronto Maple Leafs. According to one host, that’s a different problem the Oilers don’t want.

On a recent episode of the Got Yer’ Back podcast, Oilers host Rob Brown acknowledged that no Andrew Mangiapane trade will be easy. The Oilers might have to swallow a bad deal. But, rumors of Ryan Strome or Maccelli deal from either the Anaheim Ducks or Maple Leafs feels unlikely.

“As far as I understand it, there’s nothing imminent here—nothing happening tonight,” said Ryan Rishaug. “I checked in on this a little bit. You hear Anaheim mentioned, with talk of a potentially strong return. Some people float Toronto, others Vancouver. That’s why we’re even talking about young players who might play in the top six.”

He added, “But when you look at it, the combination of him and Frederic just hasn’t worked —it’s been a train wreck. I’m not sure what else to say. He’s a healthy scratch again, and it feels like this is basically done and cooked now with Mangiapane.”

Brown responded:

“It’s been a disaster. Especially considering how much this one was talked about. You look at his role—he was a fourth-line player in Washington. His career has been going in the wrong direction. Any trade involving Mangiapane? You’re taking on someone else’s problem. You’re not getting something good back when you’re moving a guy making $3.6 million who’s being healthy scratched on a consistent basis.”

Laughing: “A constant scratch—Maccelli’s in Toronto.”

In other words, there’s no reason for the Oilers to work a one-for-one deal like this. Sure, it moves on from Mangiapane, but it just brings in another winger who hasn’t played regularly.
