Good and Bad News as Maple Leafs Updated on Several Injuries
Get the latest updates on Maple Leafs injuries, including Chris Tanev and Dakota Joshua’s current status and prognosis.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing another tough stretch on the injury front, with head coach Craig Berube confirming that both Chris Tanev and Dakota Joshua will miss significant time.
Elliotte Friedman was among several reporters who offered an update on the Maple Leafs injury situation on Wednesday afternoon.
It was revealed that Tanev is dealing with a groin injury unrelated to the upper-body issue that sidelined him for nearly two months earlier this season. Berube said the team is still evaluating next steps, but made it clear the veteran defenseman will be out “a while.” It’s a frustrating setback for Toronto, as Tanev had only recently returned from injured reserve and played just three games, averaging over 20 minutes per night while providing his usual stabilizing presence.
Joshua’s situation is more concerning. The forward remains in Detroit after suffering a kidney injury with internal bleeding during Sunday’s game against the Red Wings. Berube said Joshua is “doing better” but will also miss significant time. Joshua is expected to return to Toronto shortly after spending time in Detroit with family.

The injuries will likely force the Leafs to place both players on injured reserve. Toronto will continue leaning on depth defenders such as Philippe Myers and Troy Stecher, while Brandon Carlo’s potential return from foot surgery could help stabilize the blue line.
There Was Some Positive Injury News for the Maple Leafs
There was some positive news, however. Auston Matthews skated again as he works through a lower-body issue, and goaltender Anthony Stolarz was on the ice for the first time since suffering his injury in November. Berube stressed there is still no timeline for Stolarz’s return.
With Toronto stuck near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, the loss of Tanev and Joshua — both key physical contributors — adds another layer of challenge during a critical stretch of the season.
