Flames Sign Devin Cooley to Contract Extension
The Calgary Flames have signed Devin Cooley to a two-year extension. Discover the details of his new $1.35M contract.
The Calgary Flames have signed backup goaltender Devin Cooley to a new, two-year contract extension. The deal carries a $1.35M AAV. This means the Flames have their tandem locked in for a few seasons, with Dustin Wolf as the starter and Cooley as his backup.
It has been a whirlwind couple of months for the goalie, who, not that long ago, wasn’t necessarily being viewed as go-to goaltender in the NHL. Today, he’s carved out a role as one of the better 1A options.
Eric Francis of Sportsnet writes, “Incredible value for a team that now has one of the better goalie tandems in the league. Tidy piece of work for the GM.”
Cooley’s stock has surged since training camp after entering the season with just six NHL games on his résumé. Beating out Ivan Prosvetov for Calgary’s backup role, the 28-year-old has emerged as one of the league’s better No. 2 goaltenders.
In limited action, his numbers have been excellent, all at a relatively low cap hit.

Pro Hockey Rumors writes, “Not only has Cooley since emerged as one of the better backup options in the league, but he’s also outperformed Wolf by a significant margin – albeit in a lesser workload. In 10 starts and three relief appearances, he’s 11th in the league in save percentage (.914) and goals against average (2.40). He is second in the league with 1.046 goals saved above expected per 60 minutes among qualified netminders (≥12 GP), per MoneyPuck.”
