Veteran forward Jonathan Huberdeau scored a goal in what turned out to be his last game of the 2025-26 season. On Wednesday night at Scotiabank Saddledome, Huberdeau opened the scoring with a power-play goal early in the first period, helping propel the Flames to a 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers in the Battle of Alberta.
The goal, assisted by MacKenzie Weegar and rookie Matvei Gridin, came at 3:12 of the opening frame as Huberdeau snapped a shot past Oilers goaltender from the right face-off circle. It set the tone for a close game that has sent the Oilers into the Olympic break with a lot to think about. Three straight losses and a downward trend in their play have the Oilers realizing they aren’t as good a team as in past seasons.

Unfortunately, the news isn’t all good for Huberdeau. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the game marked Huberdeau’s final game of the 2025-26 season, as he requires hip surgery and will miss the remainder of the year.
Huberdeau Was Playing Through a Serious Injury
Reports indicate the 32-year-old winger had been playing through significant pain all season. With the Flames sitting well out of playoff contention, the Olympic break and no playoff games allow the forward time to get things sorted.
Huberdeau chose to push through for the rivalry matchup against Edmonton, but he will go under the knife right away. The hope is for a smooth recovery and full return to form next season.
The Flames, now 23-27-6, head into the Olympic break on a high note with the season-series win over the Oilers.
