No Way Maple Leafs Pay Flames’ Steep Price for Rasmus Andersson
The rumors about Rasmus Andersson to Toronto are flying, but what would it cost the Maple Leafs to make a deal happen?
Talk of the Toronto Maple Leafs making a strong push to acquire Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson was abuzz on Thursday. Former Maple Leaf Jay Rosehill started the chatter, and it’s only picked up steam in the aftermath.
Insiders around the NHL have all connected Andersson to Toronto in one form or another, but there remains skepticism about whether or not anything is close enough to get done in the near future, particularly given the ask from general manager Craig Conroy, which TSN’s Darren Dreger revealed would start with Matthew Knies.

Dreger’s comments from Barn Burner on Thursday:
“So if you’re Craig Conroy, you know who you’re asking for? You’re asking for Matthew Knies, or you’re asking for something like that,” Dreger said.
The 23-year-old Knies is in the first year of the six-year, $46.5 million contract extension he signed with the Maple Leafs this past offseason.
He’s been off to a blazing hot start to the 2025-26 season offensively, producing 22 points (five goals, 17 assists) in his first 18 games, almost certainly untouchable in any trade discussions.
What Could Calgary Fetch in Return for Rasmus Andersson?
While the Flames might be seeking Knies in a trade for Andersson, that feels like a pie-in-the-sky wish for Conroy and company.
What’s more realistic is any combination of the Maple Leafs’ top prospects in Easton Cowan and Ben Danford, along with draft capital to further sweeten the deal.
Even that might not be enough for Calgary’s liking, though it ultimately could all come down to Andersson and his preferred destination, given that an extension will likely need to be a part of any trade.
It’s a complicated situation, and Toronto doesn’t exactly have a stockpile of assets to intrigue other teams around the league as they look to improve their roster. There’s a lot of uncertainty with the Maple Leafs right now, but what is certain is that Knies will be a non-starter in any of these negotiations.
