Fans Set Off By Overpay in McMann Trade Pitch to Oilers

Explore the Bobby McMann Oilers trade pitch by Steven Dangle Glynn and see why fans reacted strongly to the proposal.

Steven Dangle Glynn, host of the SDPN podcast and well-known superfan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, pitched a trade proposal that would see the Edmonton Oilers and Maple Leafs make a trade. In that pitch, he noted the following: “Who says no? To EDM Bobby McMann ($1.35, UFA) To TOR Andrew Mangiapane ($3.6, one more year) 2026 2nd (EDM) 2027 2nd (EDM) 2028 3rd (Worst of EDM or STL) 2026 6th (EDM).”

As one would expect, Oilers fans immediately got their guard up and flooded the comments section with a reaction to what they deemed a massive overpay.

When Glynn was told the return was a bit rich, and in the realm of what the New York Rangers can expect to get for Artemin Panarin, he responded, “It might be a bit much, but I think that’s a stretch. The 3rd & 6th came from the Palat cap dump, which was obviously for more money. McMann nets at least what Beauvillier got (2nd) and maybe less than Sherwood (two 2nds). Panarin ought to start with a 1st, then go from there.”

Glynn also responded to another fan, noting, “My thinking was McMann on his own is worth at least a 2nd, likely more, based on recent comparable trades. Adding to that the cap relief in the Mangiapane contract, I think this is a fair price for Edmonton. If it’s off, it’s not off by much.”

One Oiler fan argued, “Mangiapane and 4 picks (two second round picks??) is way too much for a 30-year-old whose career high is 34 points.” Glynn responded to that fan too, saying, “That’s one way to look at it. Another is that Mangiapane has 12 points and has a $3.6 million cap hit this year and next while McMann is scoring at a 26-goal pace after scoring 20 last year.”

So, What Is The Right Price for the Oilers to Pay in a McMann Trade?

The Oilers will have to pay for McMann if they want to be in the hunt to acquire him. He lacks trade protection, so he can’t say to the Leafs that he wants to go to Edmonton and nowhere else. The Maple Leafs will take the highest bid.

And, if the Oilers are going to move Mangiapane in the trade, the Leafs will expect to be compensated for taking on that cap hit. Others have reported that a second-round pick and a prospect is likely to be the going rate for McMann. That’s without Mangiapane working in.

The question becomes, is not sending a prospect, but two later-round picks, a fair swap for the Oilers? And, is getting the Leafs to take on Mangiapane worth a second-rounder?
