Could the Oilers Consider a Move for Leon Draisaitl’s German Linemate?

Is Leon Draisaitl’s chemistry and relationship with Frederik Tiffels worth a closer look for the Edmonton Oilers?

Leon Draisaitl — like many other NHL stars — is making his Olympic debut in Milan, Italy, leading the charge as captain of Team Germany.

Not only has serving as flag bearer and representing his country on the biggest international stage for the first time been special enough for Draisaitl, but he’s also been reunited with his childhood best friend, Frederik Tiffels. In fitting fashion, the two connected on a goal just 23 seconds into their opener against Denmark — a moment that clearly meant a lot to the Edmonton Oilers superstar.

Draisaitl said:

“We played these moments on the street together (and) dreamed of this. To get to experience this with him and play together and even connect on a goal is really special.”

It’s Draisaitl and Tiffels first time playing together since the 2014 World Junior Championships. The 30-year-old Tiffels is having a productive season for the Berlin Polar Bears of the DEL, with 43 points produced (eight goals, 35 assists) across 44 games played so far.

Should the Oilers Keep an Eye on Frederik Tiffels?

Adding a player strictly because he’s the best friend of one of your franchise’s superstars rarely works out. However, Tiffels’ production in the DEL — along with his obvious chemistry with Draisaitl — at least warrants some consideration from the Oilers’ front office.

Finding consistent wingers for Draisaitl in Edmonton has been a challenge throughout his career, though he always finds a way to produce no matter who’s beside him. Although Vasily Podkolzin and others have shown flashes of chemistry in that role, there’s no doubt that securing a more reliable option to flank Draisaitl would be ideal for everyone involved.

Draisaitl Tiffels Oilers

We won’t know whether Tiffels represents an upgrade over what they currently have until he’s tested at the NHL level. That said, he has consistently produced close to point-per-game numbers in Germany’s top professional league, so it’s an intriguing possibility to say the least. Not to mention, he’s known particularly for his playmaking ability — a fascinating proposition to be the setup man for a four-time 50-goal scorer and Rocket Richard Trophy winner.

Tiffels would also likely come at a relatively low salary, which is significant for a team frequently strapped against the cap. GM Stan Bowman, of course, has experience bringing players over from the DEL, having signed Josh Samanski in a similar circumstance just last year. Tiffels is currently under contract, and Berlin would need to allow him to activate his NHL out clause, but that’s a hurdle that they should be able to overcome.

All in all, it would be a low-risk move with potential upside both on and off the ice. So if Draisaitl and Tiffels continue to thrive together at the Olympics, it should and will only increase the likelihood that the Oilers at least give the idea some thought.
