Connor McDavid Sends Clear Message on Winning Cup With Oilers

Winning a Stanley Cup as an Edmonton Oiler is non-negotiable for Connor McDavid.

Connor McDavid has accomplished just about everything you could dream of through the start of an NHL career. Eight 100-point seasons, five Art Ross Trophies, three Hart Trophies, a Rocket Richard Trophy, and even a Conn Smythe—yet the one thing still eluding him is a Stanley Cup.

Back-to-back trips to the Final, just to lose in heartbreaking fashion to the Florida Panthers both times, have only added fuel to the fire for the best player in the world.

McDavid is eager to get it done in Edmonton with this core group, and while he’s already shown that commitment by signing an extension, it never hurts to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth.

During Saturday night’s After Hours with Scott Oake, McDavid was asked about his motivation to get back to the dance with this group and finally get the job done—and he didn’t speak as if it might happen in Edmonton, but like it absolutely will.

McDavid said:

“We’re hungry, we’re a hungry group obviously. We’re not going anywhere; there’s no quit in this group. Knock us down, we’ll keep coming back, coming back for more… These are moments that will live with us forever, but it will make it that much sweeter when we get the job done,”

If possible, the 28-year-old looks to be playing the best hockey of his life, and it shows in the production with a ridiculous 68 points (24 goals, 44 assists) through 39 games played this season.

Connor McDavid’s Comments Should be Music to Oilers Fans’ Ears

Any concerns should have been eased when McDavid’s extension was announced, but that doesn’t make his words of commitment any less significant.

McDavid is one of the most driven athletes in the world right now, fully locked in on bringing the Stanley Cup back to Edmonton—and he doesn’t sound like someone planning an exit before that mission is accomplished.

Could he bolt in a few years if they eventually win one? Sure, it’s possible. But if that day comes, Oilers fans can do nothing but appreciate having witnessed one of the greatest players of all time deliver a championship to the city and organization that means everything to them.

Let’s not put the cart before the horse, though. There’s still plenty of work left for McDavid and company if they’re going to finish the job and capture the ultimate prize—and it won’t come easy getting through a loaded Western Conference.
