Canucks to Trade Big Piece of Remaining Core?: Taking Calls on Elias Pettersson
The Canucks once built around Elias Pettersson. Now they’re listening on trade calls. It’s a decision could define Vancouver’s future.
It’s amazing how far things have fallen in Vancouver. Just a few years ago, the Vancouver Canucks looked like a franchise on the verge of something special. A core featuring Elias Pettersson, J.T. Miller, Quinn Hughes, Brock Boeser, and Bo Horvat suggested they were a team that could compete for years. Fast forward to today, and only Pettersson and Boeser remain from that group — with Vancouver sitting dead last in the NHL and asking questions about their top stars.
Specifically, trade talk is gaining traction regarding Pettersson.
On TSN’s Insider Trading, Darren Dreger reported that the Canucks are actively listening to trade interest in Pettersson, even though they are not 100 percent convinced moving him is the right play. Part of the problem is that Pettersson is starting to produce, and the Canucks know that he would thrive with a change of scenery. The other part is his contract and how it might limit the strength of any possible return.
If Vancouver ultimately moves him, it would be a clear declaration that a full rebuild is underway.
The Canucks Ready to Pull the Trigger on a Pettersson Trade?
This management group hasn’t exactly been timid. Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin already pulled the trigger on a franchise-altering move earlier this season by trading Quinn Hughes, a decision made easier by Hughes’ unwillingness to commit long-term. Pettersson’s situation is far more complicated. His $11.6 million cap hit runs through 2031-32 and includes a full no-move clause, giving him complete control over any potential destination.

From a pure talent standpoint, Pettersson should still be a premium asset. He’s 27, has a 102-point season on his résumé, and plays the NHL’s most scarce position. Centers with that pedigree rarely become available. The problem is risk. Pettersson’s production no longer matches his salary.
Still, all it takes is one team believing a fresh start unlocks what he can bring to a team that needs a superstar. If that team exists the Canucks’ could kickstart a rebuild by trading one of the biggest assets they have left to move. If he goes, expect names like Filip Hronek, Brock Boeser, Conor Garland, and Jake DeBrusk to follow.
